You don’t need to wait until things feel urgent. Most people start once daily tasks are becoming a bit harder than they used to be.

Call 1800 200 422 or register online.
Have your assessment
A free, in-person visit — usually at home — to work out what level of support would genuinely help.
Complete the means test
A free income/assets check with Services Australia, run alongside your assessment. Skipping it means paying maximum provider rates.
Choose a provider
Once funding is approved, you have 56 days to compare and choose a registered provider near you.
Two levels of support, depending on how much help you need.
CHSP — for lighter, entry-level help
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme covers simpler things like help with cleaning, transport, or basic home maintenance — for people who need a bit of support, not a full package.
Support at Home — for more involved needs
Replaced the old Home Care Packages system in November 2025. Provides a funded budget for help at home, from cleaning, meals and transport to more hands-on everyday help, scaled to your assessed needs.
