You don’t need to wait until things feel urgent. Most people start once daily tasks are becoming a bit harder than they used to be.
Contact My Aged Care
Call 1800 200 422 or register online. Have your Medicare card ready.
Have your assessment
A free, in-person visit — usually at home — to work out what level of support would genuinely help.
Complete the means test
A free income/assets check with Services Australia, run alongside your care assessment. Skipping it means paying maximum provider rates.
Choose a provider
Once funding is approved, you have 56 days to compare and choose a registered provider near you.
Two levels of support, depending on how much help you need.
CHSP — for lighter, entry-level help
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme covers simpler things like help with cleaning, transport, or basic home maintenance — for people who need a bit of support, not a full package.
Support at Home — for more involved needs
Replaced the old Home Care Packages system in November 2025. Provides funded budgets for personal care, nursing, allied health and everyday support, scaled to your assessed needs. Clinical care is fully funded regardless of your finances.
