Before calling My Aged Care
- Check it’s okay with your parent. It’s their decision. They can be on the call with you, or register you as their supporter.
- Have ready: their Medicare number and date of birth.
- Jot down two or three real examples of what’s getting harder, such as showering, meals, shopping, getting around, or falls.
- Find a quiet time with your parent nearby, a pen, and something to write the reference number on.
What to say when you call My Aged Care
“Hi, I’m calling about my mum, [full name]. She’s finding it harder to manage at home and we’d like to apply for an aged care assessment. [She’s here with me and happy for me to help. / I’m her registered supporter.]”
Then be ready to:
- Give the Medicare number and date of birth.
- Describe in a sentence or two what’s getting harder, using your real examples.
- Say if anything is urgent, such as a recent fall or hospital stay.
- Ask: “What happens next, and roughly when will we hear from the assessor?”
- Ask: “How do we register a supporter, if Mum wants one?”
Calling for a parent: permission and registered supporters
My Aged Care needs your parent’s permission to talk with you. The simplest way is to make the first call together. For ongoing help, your parent can register a family member as a registered supporter, who can ask for and receive information and pass on their decisions. This role replaced “representatives” on 1 November 2025.
After the call
Write down the date you called and any reference number you’re given, somewhere the whole family can find it. If phone or online is hard, Services Australia can book a face-to-face appointment on 1800 227 475.
What happens next
An assessor will contact your parent to book a time for the My Aged Care assessment (many people still call it an ACAT assessment). The step-by-step guide covers the documents to gather and how to describe a typical day.
Our free plan walks you through it, with the documents to gather and a list for writing down real examples. Start your free plan.
